Anne et Jean-Francois Ganevat - 2018 de Toute Beaute
Jean-François Ganevat ... A name that needs no introduction. Jura icon and one of the region’s top producers, Ganevat comes from a fruitful line of vignerons dating back to 1650. He and his wife Anne produce extraordinary single-parcel micro cuvées with fruit from their small biodynamic vineyard (as well as from their vigneron friends around the region). In the cellar, Ganevat gives each cuvée highly individualised élévage, and gravitates toward the Burgundian style of using ouillage to top up barrels. Long story short, he is a magician. Ganevat's grapes are spun into gold.
De Toute Beauté is made from old Gamay from the Fleurie region of Beaujolais, plus Pinot Noir and old Jura grape varieties from the estate. At a low temperature, the fruit underwent semi-carbonic maceration with indigenous yeasts, followed by 10 months maturation in truncated conical vats – all without filtration or sulphur. It's shadowy, sultry and spicy, with lashings of leather, earth and licorice root. Feels like a long, raw pash with a lover at midnight, with juicy bramble fruit and dark cherries. Teasing tannins, with a long, never-want-to-say-goodbye finish. An arresting wine for thinkers and drinkers alike.
