Ceppaiolo - 2017 Ceppa Bianco
Here's a story. In a secret Umbrian garden – full of wild flowers, birdnests and wildlife – you'll find Ceppaiolo, an astoundingly small 'vineyard' with a mere 4 rows of some of the oldest, rarest vines; totalling less than a hectare. The cellar is no more than a stone shed surrounded by bombed-out old fiats, housing 1950s winemaking equipment including an old vertical press – the only technology used in the entire winemaking process. This teeny scale allows Danilo, or the 'Yoda of natural wine' as he's referred to in Italy, to do things his own way, with microscopic attention to detail and utter freedom. His winemaking takes minimalism to new heights – no pumping, no technology; just an old barrel, a coupla resin tanks, a cement vat and some demijohns.
This orange delight is a blend of wild-grown Trebbiano, Malvasia and Grechetto, naturally fermented (7 days on skins), then into tank for 9 months before being bottled unfiltered. A loose, liberated vino that tells a compelling tropical story with each sip. Free from added sulphur and synthetic additives; just pure fermented Umbrian juice. It's SO vivacious, full of life. Listen carefully and you might just hear it breathe...
