NV Cuvee Reserve
Eighth generation grower and fourth generation winemaker Aurélien Gerbais heads up Champagne Pierre Gerbais, a small artisanal Domaine located in the village of Celles-sur-Ource in the Côte des Bar. In this river valley village, Pinot blanc (one of the four ‘rare’ grape varieties of Champagne AOC) is cultivated due to its resistance to humidity and spring frosts, and Pierre Gerbais has the largest plantings of this nearly-extinct variety in the whole of Champagne (with some of the vines over 100 years old).
Aurélien adds this heirloom variety to his reserve blend, which is equal parts Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, plus 5% Pinot Blanc, aged on lees for 30 months. Fruit has been organic since Aurélien's father converted it in 1996. This is a wine that wraps itself around your tongue and slides down your throat in fine bubbly splendour, delivering silken swathes of green apple, brioche, butter and citrus. Meanwhile, the Pinot Blanc brings a beautiful florality (is that a word?).
