Mitsutake Shuzojo - Imo Shochu Omae Wa Mou Shindeiru
Located in the small prefecture of Saga, on the island of Kyushu, Mitsutake Brewery was founded in 1688, and for generations it's been run by the Mitsutake family. They've been brewing sake forever, and potato, wheat and rice shochu for a couple of decades.
"You are already dead" reads the front of this screen-printed shochu bottle, which was designed in collaboration with the Fist of the North Star (Hokuto No Ken) manga series. The series' protagonist Kenshiro features on this edition, and the product description on the brewery's website reads "Imagine the strength of Kenshiro's royal road, and Imo shochu is prepared with the golden Senju of the royal road." Hmm, thanks Google Translate. It's a deliciously pure shochu crafted with carefully selected Kogane Sengan sweet potato from South Kagoshima, with black koji and water sourced directly from the Tara mountains. A natural sweetness from the golden sweet potato and mellow palate overlaid with a beautiful rich aroma. Serve it on ice and off you go. Sweet potato is a superfood, right?
