Hervé Souhaut - 2020 Syrah

2020 Syrah

Northern Rhône, France

These Syrah grapes come from a small parcel of land along the slopes of the Doux River where the vines are on average 50 years old. This is such an enveloping wine full of dark flowers; violets, patchouli, pomegranate, blood plum. Gusseted by wet stone, black olives and earth. Palate is silky, a little Brett, but extremely well integrated like one would see in fine Bordeaux.

The Domaine Romaneaux-Destezet began in 1993 by Hervé Souhaut. His holdings on the acidic granite soils of the northern Rhône and southern Ardèche hold vines that date pre-phylloxera — from 50 to100 years old. Hervé's holdings are so small, under nine hectares, yet all of them produce such commanding wines. He also produces wines under a Vin de Pays label, helping manage an additional twenty or so hectares. There is a perfume to his wines that is utterly intoxicating, they really are captivating cult wines.
