The oldest record of incense in Japan can be found in The Nihon Shoki (日本書紀), where it states that aromatic wood drifted onto Awaji Island. Awaji Island has, for hundreds of years, preserved this traditional craft of incense making. Enter Ha Ko. A combination of the words ha (葉; leaf) and ko (香; incense), Ha Ko is produced by Kunjudo, one of Japan's oldest incense makers founded in 1893 on Awaji Island. Throughout their history, they’ve worked with fragrance masters and artisans to create fragrant works of art.
Their latest innovation is a leaf-shaped washi paper that carefully burns like a dried leaf. Individually packaged, these incense leaves were developed over five years. Infused with an abundance of natural essential oils, you can enjoy them a modern take on potpourri (creating a halo of fragrance in any space for up to three months), or burn them like traditional incense (on a non-flammable plate) – throwing a light smoke that cleanses and deodorizes your space for up to seven minutes.
