Sebastien Riffault - 2016 AOC Sancerre Skeveldra
Whilst Sancerre is largely filled with chemical induced vineyards and austere, formulated wines, Sébastien Riffault makes Sancerre like no other. For generations, the Riffault family have been making wine in Sancerre. The family vineyards are biodynamic, and Sébastien forgoes the use of machinery – ploughing with horses, picking and rigorously sorting by hand. Uniquely, he picks late so the grapes are affected by botrytis, however the wines are vinified dry. This, coupled with long élevage and zero additions, births wines of a unique and ethereal nature.
Sébastien’s 2016 AOC Sancerre 'Skeveldra' is like a Cézanne still life, expressing florals, fresh fruits, herbs and honey. Long, mineral strokes pull the picture together, with juicy dashes of citrus and spice. Full bodied and fragrant. With air, this work of art morphs into fascinating new compositions It's Sauvignon Blanc from 50 year-old vines in a 1ha parcel in St. Satur. The grapes were 50% affected by botryits, wild fermented and aged for 2 years in tank, then another 12 months in old barrels. Zero added sulphur. THIS IS NOT YOUR CLASSIC SANCERRE. Avoid it if you like safe. Otherwise, prepare to have your mind blown.
