In a region that’s sometimes looked over when we discuss fine wines of France, for us the wines of this region are some of the most expressive, unique and transportative in the world. Another thing oft looked over, commitment to sustainable viticulture. One of the French pioneers of biodynamic viticulture—this tiny, artisanal Domaine was the first in Châteauneuf to convert to biodynamics some 30 years ago. Since this time (and especially since 1996 when the Armenier sisters took full control), Domaine de Marcoux has been on a steady path to becoming one of the true greats of the region. As with most Domaine’s in the region, it still only produces a humble amount of wine - two to four thousand cases for the world. For so many, the wines are a hidden treasure. At a dinner once, someone stated to Sophie Armenier, the Domaine’s winemaker,“When I drink these wines, I can’t help but think of Burgundy,” to which Sophie replied, “Well, let’s not forget that there was once a time when the producers of Burgundy blended their wines with Châteauneuf!”. In a region renowned for savoury and wildness and untamed expressions, Marcoux firmly subscribes to the fruit-equals-terroir school of thought. These wines are seductive.
