Eduard and Stephanie Tscheppe run a 14ha biodynamic estate in Burgenland, crafting distinctive single plot wines from native varietals. Each potion is separated by personality, their labels forming a flavourous fictional family tree. Gut Oggau have become one the most sought after, cult-status wines in Austria.
Atanasius comprises fruit from a low yielding plot of 35 year-old Zweigelt and Blaufrankisch vines growing on gravel and limestone. The grapes are destemmed and wild fermented in 500L and 1200L barrels, in contact with the skins for three weeks. Élevage is done in the same barrels for a year. The wine is bottled unfined, unfiltered and without sulphur. Atanasius is charming and affectionate, with a youthful spirit that hums in the glass. Rather full bodied and impossible not to like. An anytime wine.
